چکیده

In an ideal case telepresence achieves a state, where a human operator can no longer di erentiate between an interaction with a real environment or a technical mediated one. This state is called transparent telepresence. The applicability of telepresence to on-orbit servicing (OOS), i.e. an unmanned servicing operation in space, teleoperated from ground in real time, is veri ed in this paper. For that purpose, a communication test environment was set up on ground, which involved the Institute of Astronautics (LRT) ground station in Garching, Germany and the ESA ground station in Redu, Belgium. Both were connected via the geostationary ESA data relay satellite ARTEMIS. Utilizing the data relay satellite, a teleoperation was accomplished, in which the human operator as well as the (space) teleoperator was located on ground. The feasibility of telepresent OOS was evaluated, using an OOS test bed in the Institute of Mechatronics and Robotics at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The manipulation task was representative for OOS and supported real time feedback from the haptic-visual workspace. The tests showed that complex manipulation tasks can be ful lled by utilizing geostationary data relay satellites. For verifying the feasibility of telepresent OOS, di erent evaluation methods were used. The properties of the space link were measured and related to subjective perceptions of participants, which had to ful ll manipulation tasks. An evaluation of the transparency of the system, including the data relay satellite, was accomplished as well.

Framework for Evaluating Customer Value and the Feasibility of Servicing Architectures for On - Orbit Satellite Servicing

The question that this thesis examines is whether traditional monolithic satellite designs have limited the value that the satellite market generates for the space industry. To answer this question, this thesis focuses on the "Value" that satellites generate. By examining the value that satellites offer their operators, this thesis determines if alternative methods of satellite design offer gre...

Demonstration of a Ka-Band communication path for On-Orbit Servicing

The objectives of on-orbit servicing (OOS) missions include manipulation, proximity operations and inspection of target satellites. Therefore the servicer satellite often has to be teleoperated at low latency for several minutes to fulfill these tasks. That means communication plays a crucial role for OOS missions because real time teleoperation including high data rates has to be realized. So ...

A Review of Robotics Technologies for On-Orbit Services

Space robotics has been considered one of the most promising approaches for on-orbit services (OOS) such as docking, berthing, refueling, repairing, upgrading, transporting, rescuing, and orbit cleanup. Many enabling techniques have been developed recently and several technology demonstration missions have been completed. Several manned servicing missions were also successfully accomplished but...

A Rare Penetrating Trauma of Both Orbit and Nasal Cavity

Introduction: Diagnosis of orbital foreign body (FB) penetration is usually obvious when part of the FB is still attached at the entry wound (1). However, the depth and course of the FB in this case was not visible.   Case Report: A 5-year old female presented with a pencil penetrating the left orbit. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed that the pencil penetrated the left orbit (extraseptal)...

Verification of a CFD solver in near ground effect for aerodynamic behavior of airfoil NACA 0015

Numerical investigation was performed on NACA 0015 which is a symmetric airfoil. Pressure distribution and then lift and drag forces are verified. Changing of ground clearance was a considerable point. Also the angle of attack was changed from 0° to 10°. Pressure coefficient reaches its higher amounts on the wing lower surface when the ground clearance diminishes. Increment of the angle of atta...
